Barrier Point Fibre High Speed Internet

Read more here - http://barrierpoint.freeforums.org

Anyone living in Barrier Point will realise that their internet speed is rather lacking and options are limited.
Most residents have 1.5 to 3mb/s connection speeds and some of the lucky few get around 5mb/s but this is not really good enough these days.
Every attempt to contact BT about this matter seems fruitless. Not a single employee can say if or when fibre broadband will be extended from the local exchange to the Barrier Point building. Just because the exchange is enabled this does not automatically mean BT is willing to actually lay a fibre cable to the building.
The BT line checker gives no indication that fibre will be available at any stage within the next year.

Use the above link and jump down the page to 'Check if you can get BT Infinity' - register your interest at least!

Top tip so far is to add one of these guys: XF-1e Professional ADSL 2+ Microfilter
and to get BE Broadband with true ADSL2+ technology.

*** Broadband Update!! ***

From: Andrius via Comments @ 11 May 2012 17:19

GOOD NEWS !!

Just got of the phone, I've been speaking to Hyperoptic who were actively pursuing a chance to get High Speed fiber optic connection for the whole BP building. There prices are really attractive for what they offering. They just waiting for some paper to be signed so work can start. They couldn't give me exact date for first flats to be rolled out, but from information i gather it should be some time in June - July 2012. If you would like to register your interest or check available packages please go to https://hyperoptic.com/web/guest/home#3
for more information.

Hello,
I am currently living in Barrier Point development, which is great as it is. I've got no complains what so ever.
However there is one massive downside for the whole experience which is internet speed.
In this new media filled age where everything you need you can find online, there is ever so growing need to have fast reliable internet. As you may know BP building is still using copper cable that can be traced back to exchange which is situated close to canning town station. This makes it a long distance and therefore internet speed never go beyond 4Mbps. This means that people will struggle to watch youtube, iplayer other media sources and HD is beyond its capabilities.
But it shouldn't be that way, BT and Virgin are already rolling out their Fiber connections. However, although our exchange 'Albert Dock' is enabled for fiber our building is still haven't been reached.
I would like with your consent start people’s initiative, submit signed petition and raise awareness for  BT that are people who need faster internet at home. This also could increase value for their property.
Every day when I meet my neighbours, always ask them how would they feel about such initiative and they all agree that faster broadband is a must in our fast paced everyday life.

I'm quite certain that most of the people would sign up and then I would like to present our case to BT. Majority of people living in this development and around barrier point park, have great need and means to pay for their need. Just need someone to take the lead and show BT that their investment would be feasible and they would gain high numbers of new subscribers.
What I’m looking from you is just approval and support for such initiative, technical contact who would know telecoms layout of the building and someone who would be the best contact for any future BT installations.
I’m very hopeful for your support and thank you for doing great job by looking after our building.
Let me know what you think, any suggestion or development that i'm not aware off ?
Much appreciated.
Andrius

Hi
I have recently moved into Tower 8 at the barrier point.
Your blog has been very helpful - Thank You!
I just wanted to make a point regarding the internet speeds.
I don't believe its down to the Internet Service Provider that determines the speed.
From working in the background of IT and worked at an ISP, the exchange all the residents connect to is consistent in terms of the throughput back to the building. At times, very very rarely, the ISP may put special hardware to increase speed for an individual but as BT own the exchanges it is indeed a rarity.
I am with Virgin Media, would of liked to be with Sky but had no choice due to still being in contract with them.
Initially the speeds I got with their not so good Netgear router was around 3.5mb.
Since I have tweaked my owned modem and managed to get 5mb and I've played around with it to get 5.5.
I am still trying to customise it but its dependent on settings and of course how to tweak.
If any residents would like a faster speed (increase of 1-2mb) I would be more than happy to assist.
Thanks
Mo

  5. Hello

I am an artist - I've been researching into the Thames Barrier area and would be interested to speak to anyone living in Barrier Point who is a writer, actor, performer regarding a potential project. I'm not sure how many people will see this blog post. Is there a possibility to advertise in the block at all?
    Thanks
